Stephen Harron wins Leo for the second time

Stephen Harron added to his name for the second time on the Leo Molloy cup on 8th March three years after his first success following a 7-0 win over fellow county team mate Jordan Boyce in John Joes to conclude one of the highest standard of darts ever seen in this tournament with the Donegal county lads showing why they are All Ireland champions throwing to a high standard with non-county players also adding to the action with some good performances. Harron was in top form all day and with the Paddy Byrne and Con Sean Cups already won it added to a successful year for the inform Ballintra thrower. With over 90 players entered on the day it was nonstop action from the start, beaten semi-finalist was crowd favourite Charlie Grant and county captain Cartha Boyle and it was all county players in the quarters apart from B county player Des McGettigan, this tournament is not seeded that just the way the board draws worked out.

Holder Ciaran McGeady was beaten in the quarter finals by Cartha Boyle in a close match while John Meencha had the highest checkout of 164 in his last eight match with Charlie Grant to force a decider all those matches bar one went to a deciding leg, LJ McShane was the best youth on the day while Allison Murray won the best lady thrower prize.

Thanks to John Joes and Kilcar House for hosting, to Michael Curran for marking the semis and final and his help on the day, to all who marked matches to keep things running smoothly and to our sponsors: Heineken Ireland, Kilcar House, John Joes Bar, A & J Construction, Tasty Bites Takeaway, Tuna.ie, Floyds Mace Dunkineely, The Molloy Family, James Byrne Media Services, Carrick Meats, The Sim Clinic, Kilcar Cabs, The Paddy Byrne Perpetual Cup Tournament and The Norman Blain Memorial Cup Tournament.

That’s tournament number 25 and one that will live long in the memories and a fitting tribute to Leo who would be so proud of the standard of darts in the county and the amount of young players entering tournaments!

The 2025 Leo Molloy takes place on March 8th and with minimum €3,000 in prizes with the winner guaranteed €1000!

Since 2000 we have seen some of the biggest names in darts travel to Kilcar to play in the this tournament in memory of Leo who passed away 26 years ago last December, he was well loved and respected in the world of darts and was heavily involved in the South West area with reforming the league in the early 1990s and helping to run tournaments including the famous Norman Blaine Competition in The Glenbay which was one of the biggest in Ireland at the time in the late 80s early 90s and he was the first manager to manage the Donegal darts team to an All-Ireland title in 1998 but he was sadly taken at a young age in 1999 so this tournament is a fitting tribute to him.
