Roartys 5-2 Cope House

Roartys won the 2012 league title for the first time following a 5-4 victory over holders The Cope House in the Glenhead on the last Saturday of March. They were 2-1 up after the doubles John Con/Michael Byrne beat Philip/John D Gallagher 2-1 but it was the Cope lads who should have won this one missed doubles proved costly. Kieran Carr/Anthony Gallagher beat Stephen Muirhead/Declan Cunningham also 2-1 Stephen had a 102 check out in the first leg while Kieran won the match with a 123 finish and in the final doubles Rodney McBrearty/Irwin Muirhead beat JP Byrne/Kevin Squires also 2-1, JP had a 108 finish in the first leg.

Kieran Carr put Roartys 3-1 up with a 3-1 victory over Irwin Muirhead he won the first two legs with double 8 and double 5 finishes, Irwin finished double 6 in the third leg then Kieran finished double 8 to finish the match. Philip Gallagher got the second point of the night for the Killybegs lads with a 3-2 win over Kevin Squires he went 2-0 up with double 10 and 4 finishes, Kevin took the next two legs with double 8 and 31 finishes while Philip won the deciding leg with a double 16 finish. John Damien Gallagher tied the game up with a 3-2 win over Michael Byrne, JD won the first leg with a double 16, Michael made it 1-1 with a double 18, a 40 finish put JD 2-1 up before Michael with a 16 dart leg tied things up with a 43 check out, in the deciding leg JD finished 5 (1 double 2) to win the sixth match of the night. John McGinley defeated Rodney McBrearty 3-2 in the next match Rodney won the first with a 56 finish (15 double 20) John won the next two legs with 56 and 40 finishes, Rodney squared things up with a 82 finish but it was John who put Roartys 4-3 up with his second double 3 finish of the night. Declan Cunningham took the match to a decider with a good display of darts to defeat Anthony Gallagher 3-1 Antony won the first leg with a 25 finish while double 10, 10 and 64 finishes the first of those was a 17 dart leg. James P Byrne was the man who clinched the title for the Cashel lads with a 3-0 win over Spot with double 2, 25 and double 10 finishes he just missed a 109 checkout to win the match and make it a clean sweep for Roartys.

Thanks to Andrew and Damien who marked and checked the games, to all the bars and players who took part in the league without you there would be no league and to anyone who helped in anyway during the season.

Bridge Bar 5-2 Big Francies B

The Bridge Bar clinched the B cup for the third time in their fourth B final in a row but this time with a new look team than the side that won it two years ago with a 5-2 win over Big Francies B in O’Donnell’s. The Ardara side won the first doubles of the night with Patrick Maloney/Pauric Molloy beating Francis Curran/Garry Gillespie 2-0 Pauric finished tops and double 4 in this one. The Bridge Bar took the next two games 2-0 Paul Gillespie/Kieran Gallagher beat Stephen/Adrian Gallagher with both legs finished on double 1 by each player. Paul McNern/Jonny Byrne beat Darragh Heekin/Paul Gallagher double 10 in the first by Paul and double 1 in the second for Jonny were the finfishes in this one.

Patrick Maloney got Big Francies second and last score on the board with a 3-2 win over Kieran Gallagher, he won the first leg in 20 darts with double 16 checkout, Kieran went 2-1 up with tops and double 15 finishes before a tops finish on 21 darts won the game foe Patrick. Paul Gillespie beat Stephen Gallagher 3-0 with finishes of 25, and double 10 twice to make it 3-2 to the Carrick men. Francis Curran beat Kevin McCabe 3-1 he took out 59 in the first leg before Kevin squared things up with a double 10 finish, double 2 and double 12 finishes won the game for Francis. Johny Byrne beat Paul Gallagher 3-2 to secure the cup for Byrnes in a very tense match that kept the large crowd on the edge of their seats Johny won the first leg on tops, Paul took the next two legs with 56 and double 16 out shots before a first dart double 7 finish by Jonny took the match to a decider and after a few missed darts at doubles by both players it was Jonny who got double 2 for the win.

Well done to both sides for an entertaining game of darts most of these lads never played in a final before and for the bottom two sides to provide an exciting game like this it’s a credit to you both and hopefully both sides can take encouragement for next season with this experience, thanks to the checkers and markers and to O’Donnell’s for hosting the event.

Roartys retained the SWDDL Knockout cup in the Bridge Bar on Saturday 24^th March with a 4-1 victory over The Cope House. John McGinley defeated David Gallagher 5-1 in the opening match John finished tops in the two opening legs before David finished double 19 in the third John won the next three legs with 20, 10 and 36 finishes he also had a 180 and a 16 dart leg.

Philip Gallagher levelled the match by beating JP Byrne by the same score line he won the first five legs with , 16, 96, 94, 32 and 8 finishes JP won his only leg with a 32 checkout while Philip took out 8 to win the match for the Killybegs lads he also had a 180.

The match of the night was Michael Byrne against Irwin Muirhead, Irwin went 3-0 up with 76, 32 and 16 finishes before Michael pulled one back with a 20 finish then Irwin finished 48 to go 4-1 up before Michael staged a great comeback with 47, 32, 2 and 54 finishes to seal a vital victory in the match.

Kevin Squires then beat Stephen Muirhead 5-2 , he went 2-0 up with 72 and 10 finishes before Stephen tied the game up with 68 and 55 checkouts but Kevin went onto take the next three legs with 54, 104, 32 and 16 finishes to put Roartys one game away from victory.

Kieran Carr versus Declan Cunningham turned out to be the final game of the night, Declan won the first leg with a 12 checkout, Kieran took the next three legs with 20, 41 and 60 checkouts, Declan made it 3-3 with 6 and 8 finishes but it was Kieran that held his nerve to win the next two legs with 2 and 20 checkouts to retain the cup for Roartys. Norman Fuller v Rodney McBrearty and Antony Gallagher v John D Gallagher were the two matches not played. Well done to both sides for an entertaining night of darts.

Both sides meet again in the League final this Saturday in Glenhead with Roartys aiming to become the first side to do the treble since the Sliabh Liag in 2004 while the Cope are going for 3 in a row of league titles.
