John Joe’s clinch First Knockout Cup Title

Kilcar side John Joe’s won their first ever SWDDL Knockout Cup on the 21st April last with a 4-3 win over favourites Glenhead in a packed John Joe’s in a trilling final, this win follows victories over The Bridge Bar and Fawltys on their way to the final.

The first match of the night was John Joe’s Garath O’Donnell against Kieran Carr, Garath went 2-0 but Kieran pulled one back before Garath took the vital forth leg to give John Joe’s a 1-0 lead, Gerard McBrearty beat Kevin Squires by the same score coming from 1-0 down, Gerard won the second leg in 17 darts to put John Joe’s 2-0 up.

The Glenhead then came back to win the next three matches, Dermot McGuire beat Martin McGinley 3-1, John Con McGinley beat James Cunningham 3-0 and Dermot Gillespie beat Barry Doherty 3-2 in the best match of the night.

Barry McShane took the 6th match of the night to tie things up at 3-3 following a 3-0 over Pat McNelis so yet again it was up to Kevin Lyons to win the deciding match, Lyons faced Gerry McNern and went 2 up before taking out 62 to win the cup for John Joe’s in front of joyous scenes in the venue, well done to both teams for a great night entertainment.

John Joe’s caused a cup upset by defeating Fawltys in O’Donnells last Friday night to send them to a Cup final meeting with holders Glenhead this Saturday in John Joe’s.

The first of this seasons SWDDL Knockout semi final took place in The Bridge Bar, Carrick last Friday with holders Glenhead advancing to the final following a 4-0 over Kilcar House. First match of the night was a close one between Kieran Carr and Noel Kennedy Noel had a 131 checkout to take the match to a decider which Kieran won in a close final leg, Kevin Squires defeated David Kennedy 3-1 and Dermot McGuire beat Gavin O’Donnell 3-0 to send the Cashel side 3-0 up before what turned out to be the last match of the night between John Con McGinley and Kenneth Kennedy this also went to the deciding match all the legs in this match went “with the throw” John won the “bull” the final leg also went with the throw with John winning to take Glenhead to the final. Glenhead now play either Fawltys or John Joe’s who meet this Saturday.
