The Cope House retained the SWDDL League cup following a 5-4 victory over Roartys in The Bridge Bar on Saturday night and for the second season in a row they denied the opposing team the treble. Roartys were favourites to lift the title as they were unbeaten all season and started of well taking the first two doubles with Antony Gallagher/Kieran Carr and John Con/Michael Byrne defeating Philip/John D Gallagher and Rodney McBrearty/Irwin Muirhead 2-0 in both games the games themselves were scrappy the third doubles went to Gerry McBrearty/Emmett Quigley of the Cope against James P Byrne/Kevin Squires in a very good match.
Roartys went 3-1 up following a 3-1 win for John Con against Philip Gallagher, then The Cope levelled the match at 3-3 with 3-1 wins for Rodney McBrearty against Antony Gallagher and Irwin Muirhead against Kieran Carr, Irwin had two 180’s in the match. Michael Byrne put Roartys 4-3 up when he came from 2-0 down to beat John D Gallagher 3-2; Emmett Quigley tied the mach up at 4-4 with a 3-0 win over Joe Mockler. In the deciding match it was Stephen Muirhead against James P Byrne, the game went to 2-2 and it was Stephen who help his nerve to finish double four to take the cup back to Killybegs.
Thanks to the checkers and chalkers on the night and to the Bridge Bar for the set up, thanks also to all the players fellow committee members, publicans and supporters who were involved during the season and on my own behalf thanks for kind gesture and kind words on Saturday night.
